The second Afghan expedition of the American Museum of Natural History was organized by Walter A Fairservis, Jr who also led the First Afghan Expedition. The Second expedition was comprehensive in scale. Members of the expedition included: Walter Fairservis director; Rose Lilien, Archaeologist; John Zeigler, geologist; Howard Stoudt, archaeologist; Louis Dupree, archaeologist; George Maranjian, physical anthropologist; George McClellan, naturalist; A Franklin MacKenzie, orientalist; Jan Fairservis, artist; Ann Dupree, botanist and Lawrence Kelsey, radio operator. When the Afghan Government failed to grant permission to excavate in north Afhanistan, permission to examine several caves in Kandahar Province was granted. The cave called Shamshir Ghar, "Cave of the Sword", reportedly northeast of Panjwai and west of Kandahar was the objective. This is the report of the examination and excavation.
