Brick-red publisher’s cloth, gilt lettering spine, harp decoration front cover (minor edgewear, rubbing, faint offsetting at center pp. from original 1932 seller’s invoice), w/ d.j. cover art of Sappho performing (chipping head of spine, edgewear, tear w/ loss to foot of spine, scuffing to fore-edges, closed tear), still VG/G- copy, from the library of Academy Award nominee, Rupert Hughes (1872-1956), noted novelist, playwright, screenwriter, and composer, as well as uncle of Howard Hughes, w/ Hollywood Book Store invoice laid-in, dated Sept. 16, 1932, to Hughes at his Los Feliz address, Don & Lila Foth bookplate on front pastedown. First edition of this biography of Sappho, considered one of the great lyric poets of ancient Greece, who probably wrote around 10,000 lines of poetry, of which only about 650 survive.
