London: Ward, Lock & Bowden, Ltd, 1896. Hardcover. Very Good-/No Jacket. Top edge gilt. Owner's name. Boards are bumped at the corners and rubbed at the spine. Slight foxing on the first and last pages. The frontispiece has been pasted down before its rightful place, i.e. one leaf before the tissue meant to cover it. Quite a few pages are uncut. Inserted is a newspaper clipping of a photo of Carlyle's birthplace, c. 1950.
