Nathaniel Hawthorne's (1804-1864) American classic historical fiction set in Massachusetts Bay Colony during the years 1642-1649. The novel follows Hester Prynne, her out-of-wedlock pregnancy, and her struggle to build a new life while shielding her lover and his reputation.
