About This Item
This is a bound volume of "Scribner's Monthly" - An Illustrated Magazine for the People, Volume XXII which contains 6 issues from May, 1881 to October, 1881. The highlight of the volume is the first appearance of "A Rainy Day with UNCLE REMUS" by Joel Chandler Harris in its entirety. The story appears complete in 3 serialized installments within the June (Chapters 1-5), July (Chapters 6-10), and August (Chapters 11-15) issues. The volume contains illustrations throughout. Published by The Century Co. in New York. Also included are 2 illustrated articles by John Muir ("The Wild Sheep of the Sierra" and "The Coniferous Forests of the Sierra Nevada"). Three-quarter leather binding with marbled covers.
Other interesting content includes: Bear Hunting in the South; In and Out of London with Dickens; The Mutineers of the "Bounty"; The Sanitary Conditions of New York; Among the Esquimaux with Schwatka; Jenny Lind; Along the North Shore of Long Island; The Lobster at Home; The Young Painters of America; Ice-Yachting on the Hudson; Poetry in America; Robert Fulton's Experiments; Stars of the Sea; A Boy in Gray (Civil War); Old Yorktown; Primeval California...and much more.
Condition:
The leather has begun to peel along the edges of the spine, on the front cover corners, and most of the back cover corners. Wear to the corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Ex-library copy with a large library label on the front pastedown, a card sleeve with holder on the rear pastedown, and a slip of paper with an ink date stamp on the rear end paper. There are also quarter-sized library ink stamps on a few random pages. The pages are lightly age-toned but mostly clean with only some occasional light foxing, and an occasional smudge or stain found. The bottom-right corner of page 559 has torn away (including part of the text). Some shelf wear to the edges of the boards.
