London: London: printed [by Henry Denham] in Aldersgate street at the signe of the Starre, 1587. Full leather. Very Good. Second edition, large folio; 7-1080, 1080-1371, 1371-1421, 1490-1491, 1536-1555, 1574-1592, [56]pp. Bound in early eighteenth century panelled calf over earlier (possibly contemporary) wooden boards, expertly respined and recornered, five raised spine bands between blind single fillets, gilt-lettered red morocco spine label to second compartment. Lacks title-page, preliminaries and first three leaves of text [ie. first 7 leaves A-A6 and B1), last three leaves of concluding table and closing colophon leaf, otherwise complete with normal mispaginations. A couple of early leaves with professional marginal repairs, very occasional much earlier marginal repairs occasionally touching the odd letter, short wormtrack to lower margin of a handful of leaves, engraved armorial bookplate to front pastedown, sporadic unobtrusive spots and stains, overall a clean and very attractive example of the Holinshed volume from which Shakespeare extensively drew material for his History plays. Printed in black (gothic) typeface and with attractive woodcut capitals and head and tail pieces. Includes censored pages 1328-31 removed from a majority of copies at the press following an Act of Privy Council. Archivally conserved by Arthur Green of Malvern, UK, involving complete restitching on double cords and conservation of its early wooden boards; conservation details can be found at Arthur Green's website. A very handsome example. ESTC S122178 (vol.3).

Westwood, NJ: Kindle Press. Very Good+ with no dust jacket. 1971. Limited/Numbered Edition. Hardcover. Common to this edition, the spine is quite sunned compared to the dark green half cloth, but gilt lettering remains bright. A pinpoint speck to the front cover's paper. The slipcase has minor wear to corners, the tail is bumped.; Sir Walter Scott's arguably best short story of the rough life of two cattle drivers in Scotland, privately printed in celebration of his bicentennial birthday. Copy 242 of an edition of 680 and signed on the colophon by Coleman O. Parsons who wrote an extensive Foreword for this edition. Frontispiece is a fanciful lion with spread claws, printed in red. The front pastedown bears a portrait of Scott, but I'm partial to the frontis, instead. Text block trimmed at the head edge. Printed by Meriden Gravure on Hale Paper's mould-made rag paper designed by F. T. Jackson and bearing a facsimile of Sir Walter Scott's signature of 1827. Bound by A.…
