Written below in another hand is an order for William Huff to "appear before the Judges of our Court of Common pleas at Brookville on the first Day of their term in this present Month of August..." to enter a plea to vacate the bond. Signed by William Huff and Patrick McCarty, Attested by David Richardson. 12.75" x 7.5". Original folds. Franklin County, Indiana Territory was formed in 1811, with Brookville as the county seat. Early settlers (Primitive Baptists) had built a log church there in 1805. Patrick McCarty "apparently came to Indiana in 1806, when he had a land entry in Franklin Co, IN. He was in the 1807 census in Dearborn Co, IN. He was received as a member of Little Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Franklin Co, IN, and was foreman of a jury in Franklin Co, IN, in June 1811." (Findagrave.com) Sheriff Robert Hanna (1786-1858) " is best known as one of the forty-three delegates to the 1816 Indiana Constitutional Convention and Indiana's third U.S. Senator after it achieved statehood in 1816. A native of Laurens District, South Carolina, he settled in the Indiana Territory shortly after it was established in 1800 and began his long career as a public servant in Brookville, Indiana. Hanna served as the first Franklin County sheriff (1809-20)...." (Wikipedia).
