Fourth (at least) and later printings are stated; this copy has no statement of printing but includes the publisher's ZIP code and notes it's published by the New Directions Publishing Corporation; the photographer is mentioned on the copyright page; the slipcase is paper-covered, rather than the earliest state with a cloth-covered slipcase & paper label pasted on; the title page is in the older format with the publisher's device; there is no half-title page; the book is in a smaller format than fourth & later printings, which were re-set in fewer larger pages. Hardcover in slipcase, as pictured. Light wear to book, spine titling a bit dulled; slipcase lightly rubbed. Text clean; [4], 153 pages.. Reprint. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Small Octavo.

Synopsis

Integrating Eastern and Western spiritual traditions with psychoanalysis and philosophy, this strangely simple tale, written with a deep and moving empathy for humanity, has touched the lives of millions since its original publication in 1922. Set in India, Siddhartha is the story of a young Brahmin's search for ultimate reality after meeting with the Buddha. His quest takes him from a life of decadence to asceticism, through the illusory joys of sensual love with a beautiful courtesan, and of wealth and fame, to the painful struggles with his son and the ultimate wisdom of renunciation. This new translation by award-winning translator Joachim Neugroschel includes an introduction by Hesse biographer Ralph Freedman.
