New York: Baker and Scribner, 1849., 1849. First edition. First edition. 12mo. Original green blind stamped cloth with titles stamped in gold gilt on the spine, xii, 278 pp., preface. Johnson came by way of Panama. Detailed narrative of first years of gold discovery. San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Monterey, Sacramento, San Diego, Yuba district, Weber's Creek, Sutter and his fort, gambling halls, Indian murders, etc. No maps or plates were issued with this edition. Some light cosmetic restoration to the covers, lightly foxed, else a good copy.
