Chapel Hill: The University of North Carolina Press, 1940. Hardcover. Small 4to. Tan cloth with brown lettering and pictorial stamping. xiv, 351pp. Very good. Spine slightly darkened. Tight, clean, handsome first edition of this important volume -- and with a unique autograph addition: Tipped to the front flyleaf is an Autograph Note Signed from Coleman, heavy stock 5½" X 3¼" postal card, Winburn Farm, Lexington, KY, 1955 January 19. Addressed to Ralph G. Newman (1912-98), founder of Chicago's noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop. Very good. Declines invitation to an Abraham Lincoln birthday party: "Sorry we can't come to your party for 'an old friend,' on Feb. 12th," and signs himself "'Squire' Coleman." To display the verso of this picture postcard, a small 4" X 3" "window" was neatly created in this flyleaf, so that on the flyleaf verso (facing the half-title page) one can read the printed poem "The Squire," written by fellow Kentucky historian William H. Townsend and dedicated to his friend Coleman. This two stanza tribute reads: "If one would know the real Bluegrass charm, / He first must stop at Winburn Farm / And meet the Squire. / Nobody here is ever bored, / Gray shadows dance on Morgan's sword / Above the fire. / The Squire leans back among his books, / Pioneers emerge from leafy nooks / With powder horn. / 'Let's talk of Boone and Clark', he'll say, / And sip our corn'." A scarce piece, likely printed in a small quantity by Townsend as a gift to Coleman. Coleman (1898-1983) was a prolific Kentucky author and historian whose many books and dozens of pamphlets include "Masonry in the Bluegrass" (1933) and "A Bibliography of Kentucky History" (1949).

Description:
NOTES ON THE PORO IN LIBERIA and MASKS AS AGENTS OF SOCIAL CONTROL IN NORTHEAST LIBERIA.
by George W. Harley
(Hardcover)
Ethnos Publications, 2001

These two seminal studies by Dr. George Way Harley are the basis of our present day knowledge of the Poro men's secret society of West Africa and of masks and masking traditions in Liberia. Harley, a physician, traveled to Liberia from Durham, N.C., in 1926, cutting his way through the bush when there were no roads. He established a clinic at Ganta in Mano country near the Guinea border, and ministered to the needs of the people in the region for over three decades. Because of the trust placed in him by Poro secret society initiates, and through his anthropological training at Harvard, he slowly accumulated an immense knowledge and deep insight into the otherwise impenetrable secrets of the Poro.

Nearly impossible to find in their original, these classic works are presented together in this facsimile reprint. The two papers have been bound together… Read More

African American males have never fared as poorly as they do currently on a number of social indicators. They are less likely to complete high school than their white male and female or African American female peers, they are more likely to exhibit depressive symptoms, and they have fewer sanctioned coping strategies. Arguably, no other group in American society has been more maligned, regularly faced with tremendous odds that uniquely threaten their existence. When they do receive education, mental health, and physical health services, it is often in correctional settings. They are marginalized in public policies on secondary and higher education attainment, marriage and parental… Read More
