[Monmouthshire]: The Old Stile Press, 2001. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Hicks-Jenkins, Clive. No. 34 of 300 copies, oblong quarto, [48] pp., signed by Clive Hicks-Jenkins. Richard Barnfield (1574-1620) was an English poet, probably best known for his association with William Shakespeare. These twenty sonnets were published in 1595, a year later than "The Affectionate Shepheard", for which the author enjoyed some popularity during the later 1590s. His work is less well-known than that of his contemporaries, though powerful in its musicality and clarity. For this edition contemporary Welsh artist Clive Hicks-Jenkins has illustrated the text in two-colour linocuts, mostly figural, evoking the male form.

___DESCRIPTION: Original boards covered in blue paper illustrated by the artist, lettering in silver on backstrip, top-edge stained dark-blue, fore-edge uncut, endpapers with patterned decoration by the artist, two-colour illustrations throughout (both full-page and vignette; Perpetua type, Somerset paper, oblong quarto size (9" by 11.5"), unpaginated [48] pp., limited edition, this number 34 of 300 copies, signed by the artist. Housed in a green cloth publisher's slipcase, blocked with an enlargement of the poet's signature and has a 'spyhole' through which part of the cover can be seen.

Description:
Llandogo, Monmouthshire, UK: The Old Stile Press, 2014. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine in Fine Drop-Spine Archival Box in Slipcase. Limited Edition. Hardcover. "I adore the book, and [Clive's] illustrations are magnificent. The cover is my design take on your artwork in Sonnet 10. It shows our young man facing his muse, or possibly himself in a mirror (the glass in Sonnet 11) and it's done with leather inlays and gold tooling. On the inside I tried something new. I have taken the two lines: ‘He open'd it and taking off the cover He straight perceived himself to be my lover' which is so marvellous and punchy, and I suspect daring for the time. Because of the nature of the secret love (and the clever trick with the mirror) I have tooled the lines in reverse, the first line on the front doublure and the other on the back. However, because the binding has suede flyleaves, the impression of the gold tooling is set off in the soft suede, and the words become legible, albeit rather… Read More
