World Championship Match Signed by Fischer and Spassky

267+[4 ad] pages with photographs, tables and diagrams. Small octavo (7" x 4 1/2") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. Signed by both contestants. First German edition.

The World Chess Championship 1972 was a match for the World Chess Championship between challenger Bobby Fischer of the United States and defending champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union. The match took place in the Laugardalshöll arena in Reykjavik, Iceland, and has been dubbed the Match of the Century. Fischer became the first American born in the United States to win the world title, and the second American overall (Wilhelm Steinitz, the first world champion, became a naturalized American citizen in 1888). Fischer's win also ended, for a short time, 24 years of Soviet domination of the World Championship. The first game was played on July 11, 1972. The last game (the 21st) began on August 31, was adjourned after 40 moves, and Spassky resigned the next day without resuming play. Fischer won the match 12 1/2 - 8 1/2, becoming the eleventh undisputed World Champion.

Two problems were especially dear to his heart: the fate of the European Jews and the problem of unemployment. To solve the first, Lasker proposed Alaska as a possible place for immigration - a proposal that at that time did not sound as absurd as it may sound today. Lasker also thought about the origin of antisemitism and identified unemployment as one of the main reasons that made people turn against the Jews. The 2nd American Chess Congress was held at the Kennard House in Cleveland, 5-15 December 1871. Two decisive games (+2, -2, or +1 -1) were required against each opponent. There were 73 total games. No dates or round numbers are given in the tournament book. Players were responsible for playing from 9-12 am, 2-5 pm, and 7-10 pm each day, but may have been able to arrange their own time of play, and sequence of opponents. The Ohio newspapers have more details, including dates for most of the games.
The players: George Henry Mackenzie led an interesting life away from the chessboard. Contains the report of the Congress Committee and all 432 games with notes by Steinitz. This was a 20-man Double Round Robin Tournament. One of the longest tournaments in history. In the first half of the tournament, draws were counted as a half point. In the second half, they were replayed once. Between the 38 regular rounds, 8 replay rounds, and 4 game playoff for first at the end, there were 50 rounds all told (!). Like the 4th Congress, this tournament consisted largely of foreign masters. The retirement of Captain Mackenzie seems to date from this time (though some sources credit him as US Champion until his death in 1891), giving the top American finisher some claim on being de facto US Champion. In 1872 John Watkinson started a chess column in the Huddersfield College Magazine. Eight players were invited to participate, including two very strong masters: Aron Nimzowitsch from Denmark, and Akiba Rubinstein from Poland. They met with six German chess masters that included Jacques Mieses, Friedrich Sämisch, Oscar Antze, Hans Duhm, Hermann Von Gottschall, and Walther Von Holzhausen. Games were played from August 9th to the 18th. Nimzowitsch won with a near perfect score of 6½ of 7, edging out Rubinstein by half a point. The prizes were awarded to the players at the Hotel Luisenhof. There is also an annual city tournament, which had its first edition in 1946, and reached its 62nd edition in 2007. The international tournament started off in 1928, but only in the period from 1941 to 1970 was it a truly international tournament with considerable reputation. After 1970, only seven international tournaments have been played. The 1951, 1954, 1969 and 2001 editions were zonal tournaments. xiv-[15]-122 pages with diagrams including frontispiece. Duodecimo (6 1/4" x 4 1/4") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to front cover. [Hagedorn 54, Betts 10-2] First published in Britain in 1846 and in United States in 1847.
An elementary text, containing a brief survey of chess literature (Chess and chess writers), a description of the elements, a chapter giving the first few moves of the openings, and other sections on "ends of games" (elementary mates), Games actually played (5 examples), prob3ems with examples (7) and general rules for playing the game, with a list of places where chess is played (in England) and a list of chess periodicals. The American edition is slightly re-arranged pagination, otherwise as the English edition except for the omission of the final list of places where played and periodicals.
Condition: Corners bumped, spine ends rubbed, 1" split at back hinge else about very good.
