London: Printed for J. Almon, Opposite Burlington-House, Piccadilly, 1780. 28.2 cm x 22.3 cm. Pp. viii, 140, lxii - (Appendix), [1] - advertisement. Uncut. 1 engraved folding-map, 5 engraved folding plans, 2 with tipped-on, flip-up insets, drawn by Lt. Durnford, Mr. Medcalfe, P. Gerlach and W.C. Wilkinson, engraved by William Faden, outlined in colour. Original publisher's blue/gray boards, sympathetically rebacked to style, modern printed paper spine label. Housed in a sturdy, green cloth slipcase with a gilt-framed and stamped green leather spine label. Very minor stains to boards, otherwise quite bright. Interior is marvellously clean, bright, and crisp. Map and plans are clean and bright with an occasional hint of offsetting. Slipcase is lightly scuffed but sturdy. Howes B-968; TPL 6576. "Denied a professional examination of my conduct, and disappointed of a parliamentary one", Burgoyne here defends his actions in the northern campaign of 1777, against the criticism in parliament and press which followed his capitulation at Saratoga.. Six folding maps and plans, with troop emplacements and movements hand-colored, two with overlays showing changes in troop positions, folding table. Howes B-968: "His chief defense against all charges." Sabin 9255: "His very interesting story is told in a masterly manner, and the materials of which it is composed will be held in great estimation by historians, who shall record the events of the unhappy war, to which they owe their birth."
