[From back cover] As with many new inventions, the first steamboats were often greeted with disbelief and fear. There were frequent fires and boiler explosions and many London watermen held them responsible for putting their livelihoods at risk. However, as technology improved, public confidence in the steamboats grew and by 1840, they had become one of the most popular forms of transport for Londoners. Their charm and elegance launched mass tourism and attracted everybody who could afFord their fares. This book looks at the sea-going steamboats operating between 1815-1860 serving routes from London to Gravesend, Margate, Ramsgate, Edinburgh, Dublin and the Continental services to Germany, Holland, Belgium and France. The Steamboat Revolution will appeal to anyone with an interest in maritime history or London's transport in the early nineteenth century.
