Bound in full brown crushed morocco, spine with raised bands, oval portrait of Ninon de Lenclos at the height of her beauty inset under glass in front cover, spine and both covers beautifully tooled with stylized Art Nouveau flower designs (probably fuschias); gilt-tooled inner dentelles with floral designs at corners, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. A vibrant, fine copy aside from several surface scratches and small spots of wear; front cover a bit sunned. Housed in binder's velvet-lined green cloth clamshell box. From the private library of renowned British Dante scholar Paget Toynbee (1855-1932) with his engraved bookplate to front pastedowns. Finely bound in attractive early binding of full tan morocco. Spine with five raised bands, each with gilt dots. The compartments with single blind ruled boxes plus double gilt ruled lines around a fully gilt decorated panel, each featuring a dark green leather flower onlay to the centre. Front board with elaborate floral gilt roll within double ruled lines and 48 dark green leather flower onlays round the edge. Central panel double ruled, lettered and with two floral devises, all in gilt. Contemporary full blue polished calf. Spines with five raised bands, each with gilt decorative roll. The compartments are ruled, lettered and fully decorated in gilt. Red and green labels, gilt. Double gilt ruled border on boards. Board edges with decorative floral gilt roll. Inner gilt dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Housed in a blue paper coveredslip case which has some minor wear but has done its job of keeping the books protected. The slip case is felt lined and has a beige silk tie pull. The spines are just a touch faded and there are a couple of small scratches but overall this is an attractive and finely bound set of this important collection.
