The Revivalist Congregational pastor Nathanael [Nathaniel] Appleton (1693-1784) was the pastor at the Church of Christ in Cambridge from 1717 to 1783. It is now called the "First Church in Cambridge". Appleton graduated from Harvard in 1712 and was ordained at Cambridge in 1717. He was elected a fellow of Harvard in that same year. In 1771, Harvard conferred upon him only the second degree it had ever granted of Doctor of Divinity (the first was awarded to Increase Mather 80 years earlier).
