Good. <p>The French writer, harpist and educator Stephanie Felicite du Crest de Saint-Aubin, Comtesse de Genlis (1746-1830) was better known as Madame de Genlis. Educated entirely at home, by the age of 12 she was eliciting admiration for her wit and skill as a harpist. Appointed by the duke of Chartres as responsible for the education of his sons, she wrote several works for their use. Her methods presaged more modern methods of education, making use of magic lantern slides to teach history and teaching botany on walks with her pupils while accompanied by a botanist. Madame de Genlis was best known for her children's works. Making use of Rousseau's methods while yet attacking his principles endeared her to the British. Her innovative approach to education and her morality plays further pleased her British readers. After she fled to England to escape the French Revolution, her English readers discovered that she was not the moral paragon represented in the character of the Baronne d'Almane in her book "Adele et Theodore". Jane Austen, whose protagonist in Emma considered her governess would oversee her daughter's education better after having practiced on her "like La Baronne d'Almane on La Comtesse d'Ostalis in Madame de Genlis' Adelaide and Theodore". Austen had earlier been disgusted by "indelicacies" in Madame de Genlis' "Alphonsine". Despite her claiming that she couldn't "read Olimpe et Theophile without being in a rage" Jane Austen still continued to read and lend out Madame de Genlis' works and her nieces also drew inspiration from her writings.
