5 (of a total of 8) issues, continuously paginated 13-48 and 73-96 pp., of the special newspaper documenting the life and Communist exploits of Tamara Bunke, better known as Tania the Guerrilla, an Argentine-born East German communist revolutionary and spy who joined the Cuban Revolution and fought under Che Guevara during the Bolivian Insurgency, the first few issues focusing on her work and life in Cuba and the last two issues covering her time in Bolivia. Illustrated profusely throughout, primarily reproductions from photographs and of printed documents. Very light soiling and handling wear, minor toning, three issues uncut. Small folio. Original photo-illustrated newsprint wrpps. Havana, 1970-1971. Tamara Bunke was born in Argentina to German communist parents who had fled to Argentina when the Nazis came to power. They returned to East Germany in 1952. Bunke met Che Guevara in 1960, when she was 23, while the revolutionary was visiting Leipzig with a Cuban trade delegation and Bunke was assigned as his interpreter. Inspired by the Cuban Revolution, Bunke moved to Cuba in 1961, initially doing volunteer work before joining work brigades and the militia. She was chosen to join Che in Bolivia in 1964, where she infiltrated high society and served as a spy for the guerrilla forces. She was shot and killed by the Bolivian army in 1967, along with eight fellow insurgents, when her troop was ambushed while crossing the Rio Grande. She was only 29. After her death, she became somewhat of a legend and a folk hero. The final issue of Tania recounts her death and serves as a sort of memorial: "That graceful Argentine girl with the Buenos Aires accent, Russian first name and far-reaching and universal glance...that girl with the blue blouse of the Free German Youth and the uniform of the Revolutionary Militia in Cuba continued firmly down the road of a young revolutionary, a fighter from the new generation. She felt herselt to be, above all, a daughter of Latin America, and she was absolutely determined to participate in the revolutionary struggle against U.S. imperialism and for the liberation of the oppressed people of Latin America. ...She fought together with CHE, as she had desired, in the last years of her life, giving all her strength and her life for the good of humanity." Very rare; as of December 2019, WorldCat does not locate a single copy of this publication, although in 1971 there was a full-length biography of Bunke published by Random House with the same title.
