About This Item

New York, NY Oxford University Press, 1955. Hardcover EX-LIBRARY copy, showing the usual distinguishing marks. Else, Good in Good DJ: Book shows significant wear: shows fairly heavy wear to the extremities; moderate spine lean; former owner's blind stamp at the front fly-leaf; the front endpaper has been removed; binding secure; text clean. DJ shows just a touch of wear to the extremities; a very small chip at the ourside edge of the rear panel; tiny chip loss at the lower front corner tip; most of both the front and rear DJ flaps have been removed; mylar-protected. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 197pp. Illustrated with photographs. Hardback with DJ. Features five exciting hunting tales from the world renowned master and slayer of man eating tigers and leopards. Corbett had no interest in writing any more books after the publication of his JUNGLE LORE in 1953. Knowing that Corbett had much more exciting stories under his sleeves, the publishers relentlessly pressed him to write this volume, and was well received when it finally came out in 1954, and printing millions of copies worldwide ever since. This was the last book on man eaters Corbett penned, dying in Kenya in a few months in April 1955 at the age of 80. So, this is the last of Colonel Jim Corbett's books on his unique and enthralling hunting experiences in India, and concludes the narrative of his adventures with tigers begun in the famous Man-Eaters of Kumaon. These stories maintain, perhaps even supercede, the high standard of the earlier classic collection. Corbett saves his best story of all for the long concluding chapter in this volume, describing, in The Talla Des Man-Eater, how he embarked on what he feared might be a fatal last test of skill and endurance. As always, he writes with an acute awareness of all jungle sights and sounds, choosing words charged with a great love of humanity, birds, and animals. His calm and straightforward modesty heightens the excitement and suspense of these experiences, in which he continuously risks his life to free the Indian tarai of dangerous man-eaters.
