Dust Jacket: Small tears on top/bottom of the spine (photo). There is rubbing from shelf storage on panel edges. The front panel is unclipped, the original retail price is shown. (photo). Tip-in purchase receipt ($1.55) reveals that this book was originally purchased at a bookstore in Berkeley. Toning due to light exposure on the spine and the back panel. DJ is essentially intact. A Mylar cover protects this distinct and valuable feature of this book. Note the identifier, "NC3," on the spine.

Book: The boards have light discoloration (photo). The boards and spine are firm and strong, the book lies flat, plumb, and square. Board tips are not bent and have minimal page toning (photo).
Nor marks or entries and all pages are present.


Three Lives, one of Stein's earliest works, was written in 1905 and 1906, and published in 1909, Sales were modest but received several favorable reviews. Continuous publication ever since. This publication with DJ is rare.

The book is divided into three stories, "The Good Anna," "Melanctha," and "The Gentle Lena."Each is independent but the setting for all is the fictional town of Bridgepoint, (actually, Baltimore).

Three Lives (1909) was Gertrude Stein's first published work. The book is separated into three stories, "The Good Anna," "Melanctha," and "The Gentle Lena. " The three stories are independent of each other, but all are set in the fictional town of Bridgepoint.
