Mockba - Moscow: V Universitetskoi tip, 1875 Book. Fair. Hardcover. 4 volumes bound in 2. Vol 1 - [vi], 400, ii; Vol 2 - [iv], 382; Vol 3 - [iv], 363, [iii]; Vol 4 - [iv], 374 pages. Errata only present in vols 1 and 3, so missing those from vols 2 and 4. Original cloth covered boards with what appear to be later leather spines. The leather has some wear to the edges. Vol 1 pages 1-2 are torn and damaged, but without loss, apparently glued back in. Vol 3 smaller tear to the inner margin, just into the text, reinforced along the rear. Pages 373/4 in vol 4 have tears along the edges and there is reinforcing to the inner margins of serval pages. Some tears to other page edges also. Some spotting and staining throughout. New York: E. P. Dutton & Co., 1963. First U.S. edition with scarce wraparound band reading " 'DUTTON EDITION IS SUPERIOR'/ Harrison Salisbury - NEW YORK TIMES." This edition translated from the Russian by Ralph Parker whereas the edition published in the U.S. the same year by Frederick A. Praeger was translated by Max Hayward and Ronald Hingley (the Praeger precedes this one per Fiene). Harrison E. Salisbury's January 22, 1963, review reads in part: "Of the two translations neither comes close to reproducing the rough vigor of the author's concentration camp slang .... However, Ralph Parker's version in the Dutton edition is superior to the patchwork thrown together by Max Hayward and Ronald Hingley for Praeger. The most striking blooper of the Hayward-Hingley translation is to put in the mouths of the prisoners the phrase 'Comrade Warder.' The proposed articles were written at different times and on different occasions, but their protagonist invariably remained that motley complex of stratifications of our Russian public, which is known under the general name - the intelligentsia: moderate and revolutionary; fussing about cheese artels and dreaming of world reorganization; following the representatives of the propertied society - in the construction of life, and composing its own - party construction, as an antithesis to this construction; the intelligentsia, gravitating towards the peasantry, and the intelligentsia, with the proletariat at the center of their political plans and socialist prospects.
