1682 Office of English Sheriffs Michael Dalton England LAW Judges Police CrimeThe first English treatise on sheriffs!
Michael Dalton was a 16th-century English legal writer who was known for only two works on British government practices. One of these was his 1623 treatise 'The Office and Authority of Sheriffs', in which Dalton discusses the statutes concerning sheriffs and police, judges and court cases, and laws relating to sheriffs. According to the Holdsworth in the 'History of English Law', "this book continued to be the standard authority until the beginning of the 18th-century."

Description:
London: Longmans, Green, & Co., 1899. Hardcover. This is the first printing of the Silver Library edition of Churchill's first book. The Story of the Malakand Field Force was based on Churchill's exploits with Sir Bindon Blood's expedition on the Northwest Frontier of India in 1897. While Churchill had previously applied his pen as a published correspondent, this was his first book-length work and he clearly labored over it: "I have discovered a great power of application which I did not think I possessed. For two months I have worked not less than five hours a day." Publication of the first edition of 1898 was arranged by Churchill's uncle while the author was still in India, resulting in numerous spelling and detail errors. Churchill was incensed by the errors and acted with haste to address them. Hence later states of the first edition bear errata slips. In part because of the errors in the first edition which so vexed Churchill, the publisher also issued a second edition less than a year after…

Description:
This is complicated so bear with me. This is a sammelband (collection) of four titles from the publisher Muir. Listed in order of binding: First title "Life of Thomas Paine" (1833) is not attributed but appears to be abridged Sherwin's biography of Paine (See OCLC: 933006301). Second title "Rights of Man" (1833) requires no explanation. Next two titles written by Peter MacKenzie are rare and make up most of the value. Third title "Exposure of the Spy System" is the 1832 first edition of this work. Includes frontis of Hardie's grave. The fourth (final) title "Trial of James Wilson" is the 1832 first edition. The whole thing paginates: 48, viii, 104, [2], 242, 48. Bound in high quality quarter leather with marbled boards fine binding by Starr Bookworks. Defects are: page 21/22 of "Rights" has a repaired hole affecting a few words (see scan); list of Paine's works has some check marks; title page of "Spy" has small edge tear not affecting anything. Feel free to inquire. Please see scans of the book you…

Description:
London: John Wright , 1652 A good copy of the 'Third Impression much Augmented' in full leather binding with new spine with raised bands and title label and contemporary boards. Blith (1604-1654) was known as a writer on husbandry. He was a supporter of Cromwell as the decorative title page with the motto 'Vive La Re Publick.' demonstrates. The book sets out and promotes improvements in husbandry and was suppressed after the Restoration in 1660. The binding is sound and clean. There is a lot of wear and leather loss at the corners. The marbled endpapers look to have had repair and are probably predate the binding work. The contents have toning and there has been some close trimming to margins notable in the epistles section at the beginning where page titles are missing but there is no loss to text. There is the signature of Philip Styles to the initial blank and a signature of Tho Wilkins, 1683 to the recto of the decorative title - possibly (although could be another Wilkins) repeated at the side of…

Description:
This book is in fairly good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, edges, and spine of the cover boards, as well as spots on the outside back cover board. There is minimal bumping and fraying on the cover boards. The pages are yellowing and tanning, with some vertical fraying and warping, but the pages are clear of markings. A few of the pages are dog-eared and edges torn. "The Forsyte Saga was the title originally destined for that part of it which is called 'The Man of Propery; and to adopt it for the collected chronicles of the Forsyte family has indulged the Forsytean tenacity that is in all of us. The word Saga might be objected to on the ground that it connotes the heroic and that there is little of heroism in these pages. But it is used with a suitable irony; and, after all, this long tale, though it may deal with folk in frock coats, furbelows, and a gilt-edged period, is not devoid of the essential heat of conflict. Discounting for the gigantic stature and blood-thirstiness of…

ISBN: 9780718892760 "An exploration of the history of British sport, viewed through the lens of the life and work of Samuel Johnson and his friend and correspondent Hester Thrale. / In "Swimming with Dr Johnson and Mrs Thrale," Julia Allen takes a sideways look at sport, health and exercise in the eighteenth century, and in so doing reveals unfamiliar sides of the eponymous characters she uses as guides and commentators. Samuel Johnson does battle with the rough breakers at Brighton as energetically as he did with any of his verbal opponents; and Hester Thrale – herself 'a good waterspaniel' – provides wry observations, notably on what men decided women might decently be allowed to do in that foreign country that is the past. / Allen starts with the medical theories underpinning notions about exercise, the role of the physician and the…
