New York: Covici Friede, 1935. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Good. Oatmeal cloth hardcover book in good condition, with facsimile dust jacket in mylar. This is a 1st printing, with 1935 on copyright page and no further printings listed. Cover shows usual shelf wear, particularly on spine. A very faded dampstain on bottom of cover, front back and spine. Some minor spotting and dampstaining on pastedowns and endpapers. Binding is secure, and pages are clean. Blue topstain very faded in colour. Front inner hinge a bit loose but not torn at all. Some light spotting to fore edge of text. Questions welcome. Synopsis
Tortilla Flat (1935) is an early Steinbeck novel set in Monterey, California. The book portrays with great sympathy and humour a group of paisanos (fellows/countrymen), denouncing society by enjoying life and wine in the idyllic days after the end of the Great War and preceding U.S. prohibition. Tortilla Flat was made into a film in 1942. Steinbeck would later return to the some of the panhandling locals of Monterey (though not the Spanish paisanos of the Flat) in his novel Cannery Row (1945).
