Chicago: American Medical Association, 1924. First edition. 1924 BRIEF REVIEW OF THE TURNING POINT IN DIABETES MANAGEMENT FOLLOWING DISCOVERY OF INSULIN, BY "THE DEAN OF DIABETES," ELLIOTT JOSLIN. 11 inches tall extract from JAMA including 3 papers on diabetes, unmarked and very good. The first by Joslin, who comments on the increasing life span of diabetics, and the increasing incidence of symptoms at later ages: an early recognition of the rise of type 2 diabetes. He comments on the importance of population studies comparing ethnic groups, and warns against assuming racial predispositions. Responding to the first use of insulin in 1922, he concludes that "insulin is better than any of us thought a year ago." He reports on status of his first 127 patients treated with insulin less than 2 years after its discovery. The patients received insulin an average of 18 months, and all for more than one year. 23 patients died, but "not one of the patients who died succumbed during the first year of the…

VG/VG condition unclipped dust jacket, printed price $12.95 Mr. Rogers appears on the back dj panel wearing a pale blue sweater. "In this book, real life photos are used to help young people feel more comfortable with interacting with other children and making new friends. A Note From Fred Rogers: A child's first visit with a pediatrician usually comes soon after birth. It may be months or even years later, though, that a child first shows fear about going to see a doctor. The worry of an injection or some other unfamiliar medical procedure can trigger that fear. It can also appear because another family member may be feeling medical anxieties. And, of course, new body awareness and needs for privacy develop naturally in children's early years, so all these feelings can make it very hard for them to let doctors investigate the workings of…

ISBN: 0820317713 "Ranging in subject from England's poor laws to the Human Genome Project, The Rhetoric of Eugenics in Anglo-American Thought is one of the first books to look at the history and development of the eugenics movement in Anglo-American culture. Unlike other works that focus on the movement's historical aberrancies or the claims of its hardline proponents, this study highlights the often unnoticed ways in which the language and ideas of eugenics have permeated democratic discourse. Marouf A. Hasian, Jr. not only examines the attempts of philosophers, scientists, and politicians to balance the rights of the individual against the duties of the state, but also shows how African Americans, Catholics, women, and other communities--dominant and marginalized--have appropriated or confronted the rhetoric of eugenics. / Hasian…
