Warsaw: Spółdzielnia Wydawniczo-Oświatowa "Czytelnik", 1949. Large octavo (24 × 16.5 cm). Original photo-illustrated wrappers; 3, [6], 30, [1] pp. of text and [48] pp. of photographic reproductions. Wrappers somewhat worn, especially to spine extremities; inscription to title and front wrapper verso; occasional foxing; still good or better. A photographic record (in 98 images) of the building of Trasa W-Z, a major motorway connecting Warsaw east-west. Completed in 1947-1949, the construction of Trasa W-Z was the first large-scale infrastructure project in Warsaw post WWII. Striking photomontage wrapper design was done by the graphic artist and photographer Mieczysław Berman (1903-1975), whose early work was largely inspired by Dada and Constructivism. Under the influence of John Heartfield and the Arbeiter-Illustrierte-Zeitung (AIZ) he gradually turned to overtly political photomontage and created his famous anti-Nazi photomontage works. After the end of WWII, the country was increasingly under Soviet rule by proxy. Even though the Polish People's Republic was not created until 1952, the 1947 election marked the undisputed dominance of the communists, and in 1949, the Soviet Marshal Rokossovsky was named Minister of National Defense. The photographs in this collection capture the contemporary political leaders, including Rokossovsky, while emphasizing the massive group effort of the construction of Trasa W-Z. As of June 2020, KVK and OCLC show four copies in North America.
