Description:
London: Henry G. Bohn, 1861. xvi, 664pp. With an engraved frontispiece and nearly 450 fine wood engravings in the text. Original publisher's blind-stamped brown cloth, lettered in gilt. Rubbed, corners bumped. Naively deleted inked ownership inscription to recto of FFEP, very occasional spotting. The revised edition of John Jackson's (1801-1848) monumental history of the art of wood-engraving. First printed in 1839, the work is a valuable source of information on contemporary engravers and their technique, and is generous in its praise of Thomas Bewick, under whom Jackson had apprenticed. This second edition includes an additional 145 illustrations and a new chapter on the 'artists of the present day' by Henry G. Bohn. . Second edition. Large 8vo.
