Prague: 1924-1932. Large octavo (25.4 × 17.7 cm). Publisher's pictorial wrappers; 16 pp. as well as text to wrappers. Very good or better. Single early issue of this astonishingly rich -- in text, image, and typographic design -- satirical journal of the Czech avant-garde period, which features uncredited typographic layout by Karel Teige, numerous caricatures, and poems and prose. Among the contributors are Konstantin Biebl, Zdeněk Rykr, Karel Vaněk, Jaroslav Seifert, Joe Hakr, Vlasta Burian, Vojtěch Tittelbach, Vitězslav Nezval, a translation of a poem by Sergei Esenin (by Bohumil Mathesius) and a prose piece by Mikhail Zoshchenko. It also contains a cabaret song by Ferenc Futurista. The actor, whose real name was František Fiala, reportedly received this pseudonym after Marinetti approved of his acting skills during a visit to Prague in the early 1920s. Copies in the original fragile wrappers are extremely scarce. KVK, OCLC only show various years at NYPL (vol. 4 and 5), Chicago (vols. 5-9), incomplete vol. 1 at Berkeley, AIC holds vols. 1-6, and Yale holds vols. 1-5.
