Description:
Toronto: Oxford University Press, 1968. Two famous Quebecois liberals, one of whom later became one of Canada's longest serving Prime Ministers, toured China in 1960, at the beginning of Mao's Great Leap Forward. Despite the concerted efforts of their minders (and their perhaps ironic self-description as being 'innocents'!), both Hébert and Trudeau quickly saw through the crude propaganda and provide their astute observations of the good and evil of Mao's 'New China'. A fascinating view of the country in the midst of great turmoil and also an affectionate portrait of each other by two of the most interesting Canadians of the era. Gift inscription on FFEP, otherwise pages clean and unmarked. 152 pp., 13 b&w photos.. First English Edition. Softbound. Very Good. 20 x 13 cm..
