(Folding map with a few short tears repaired verso, spotting to a few leaves, Original publisher's green pictorial cloth (spine soiled; slight dampstaining to front cover). Provenance: J. H. Donaldson (bookplate); Steve Fossett (bookplate). FIRST EDITION. Armitage sailed as navigator and Second in Command under Scott on the Discovery Expedition of 1901-04 to Antarctica. His account, which exposes some of the lighter and more anecdotal sides of the expedition, often comments on the men's characters. Original brown reversed calf, the upper cover and spine blocked in gilt, light blue watered silk endpapers, glassine wrapper, publisher's hessian-covered slipcase The edition deluxe, number 78 of 135 numbered copies, signed by Town and Silcox, with an original lithograph "Portrait of Tom Thomson": "What finally matters most in painting, is looking and savouring" (preface). A fine record by artist Harold Town and noted art historian David Silcox of the life and work of the influential early 20th-century Canadian artist Tom Thomson. First edition. Printed for Henry Colburn, Conduit Street, Hanover Square. London. 1816. 4to. xiii, bl., (2), 370pp. Folding map, 5 hand coloured tissue guarded plates. Later half calf, spine in six compartments with raised banding, gilt lettering and motifs, marbled boards, new endpapers. Short detachment of tissue guard and title page to base. Very occasional spotting. A lovely volume.
Richard Tully was the British Consul at Tripoli from 1783 to 1793, and, according to the preface, these letters were written by his sister; and attributed to his sister-in-law in the second and third editions. The author's identity has always been a mystery: there is no record of a sister, nor of another female family member residing in Tripoli apart from Mr Tully's wife and two daughters. The final entry is dated April 30, 1795, Gibraltar. It reads: "Since you must have had my letters with the journal of Tripoli". Inscribed: Robert Frost Springfield March 8 1917, on the title page. Frost's first book of poetry. Blue cloth printed in gilt, very light rubbing to corners and spine ends, good hinges, sound text block, clean pages, no other names or markings. The mylar protected dustjacket has the 75 crossed out and replaced with 100 on the front and spine, two old masking tape repairs to the front joint and along the rear flap edge to hold the dustjacket together, spine darkened a chipped due to the repairs, "A" from the title chipped away at spine head, dates in pancil below title on front panel. .
