About This Item

New York: November 22, 1986., 1986.. Fine. - A few words typed on a 8-3/4 inch high by 7-3/8 inch wide sheet of his personalized letterhead with his bold signature printed in black at the top. Signed "John". Folded twice for mailing. Fine.

Houseman acknowledges Jean Dalrymple's note to him about Dennis Hedlund and writes that he will await his call.

John Houseman [1902-1988] was a British American actor and producer who became known for his highly publicized collaboration with Orson Welles from their days in the Federal Theatre Project through the production of "Citizen Kane". As the producer of "The Blue Dahlia" he also collaborated with Raymond Chandler who wrote the screenplay for that film. As an actor, he is probably best known for his role in "The Paper Chase" for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Houseman became the founding director of the Drama Division at The Juilliard School, and held this position from 1968 until 1976. Unwilling to see Juillard's very first class disbanded upon graduation, Houseman and his Juilliard colleague Margot Harley formed them into an independent, touring repertory company they named the "Group 1 Acting Company" [later renamed The Acting Company].

Jean Dalrymple (1902-1998) was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville, appearing with James Cagney and Cary Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing, the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski, Mary Martin, Jose Iturbi, Andre Kostalanetz, Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943, serving as a board member, producer, and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951, Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder, commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world.
