December 11, 1919., 1919.. Very good.. - 45 words typed on the first side of a cream-colored sheet of his Little Theatre letterhead. The sheet is folded once to form 4 sides, each 8-3/4 inches high by approximately 6-3/4 inches wide and "The Little Theatre / New York" is stamped in blind at the top of the first side. Signed "Winthrop Ames". A penciled check mark above the date indicates that Pond has answered the letter. A hole is punched in the top left corner of the letterhead & there is a horizontal band of slight darkening through Ames's typed name. Folded twice for mailing. Very good.

Ames writes to Pond that he will be glad to have his name appear on the committee to welcome Maeterlinck [Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlinck]: "If I am in New York on January 2d I should like to come to his lecture. But I am afraid I may leave for California on January 1st."

Winthrop Ames [1870-1937] was an American Theatre director and producer, as well as a playwright and screenwriter. For three decades Ames was an important force on Broadway. His repertoire included producing and directing Shakespeare and classic plays, new plays, and revivals of Gilbert and Sullivan's Savoy operas. In 1912 Ames used his own money to build The Little Theatre on West 44th Street with the express idea of putting on experimental dramas and giving opportunities to new playwrights.
