About This Item

Independence, MO: No publisher, 1957. Autograph. Near fine condition. Unbound. Signed by Author(s). No edition. Quarto (4to). One page typed letter on personal stationery "Harry S Truman Independence Missouri" signed by Harry S. Truman. It reads "Dear Mr. Bressler: Mrs Truman and I were delighted to receive the vanilla ice cream and the chocolate nut toppings which a chance remark by Mike Rotunno [photographer] prompted your to send us. It is seldom that I pass through Midway Airport without enjoying a chocolate sundae with Mike and Bill Fields of TWA, and I am always disappointed when I miss the opportunity. I more than appreciate your thoughtfulness in reminding us of Chicago's usual hospitality. Sincerely yours, [signed] Harry S. Truman." Americana, U.S. President. Attempted assassination: Two members of a Puerto Rican nationalist group, Griselio Torresola and Oscar Collazo, tried to shoot their way into Blair House, temporary residence of the President, as part of an attempted assassination, November 1, 1950. Torresola and a guard, Leslie Coffelt, were killed. Collazo, wounded, was arrested, tried, and convicted of murder; he received a death sentence, but Truman commuted the sentence to life in prison in 1952; President Jimmy Carter freed him in 1979. Harry S. Truman (1884-1972)..
