New York, 1954. unbound. very good(+). Fine Content T.L.S. 4to. 1 page, personal letterhead, Chairman of the Board, J.C. Penney, New York, August 12, 1954, to acclaimed author Gerald Carson, giving him some biographical pointers and reminiscing about his birthplace and early life, in part: "...Hamilton is not in the Ozark country, but is located in Caldwell County, third tier county south of the Iowa state line - forty-nine miles east of St. Joseph and seventy miles from Kansas City. As you will note from reading the following reprints which I am sending to you under separate cover, I received my early experience in Hamilton and then in Denver, as a clerk in dry goods stores: "A Brief Outline of My Early History," "Faith Gave Me A Start at 56," "Penney Wise," "Responsibility - The American Way," and "A Job Ahead." Believing that you may also find them of interest, I am enclosing in the package with the reprints an autographed complimentary copy of my autobiography, "Fifty Years with the Golden Rule," and a copy of "Main Street Merchant." You are to be commended for writing a book on such a historically important subject to Americans as "the old country store." It is gratifying to know that you plan to speak to me and the Penney Corporation in contemplated radio interviews and lectures..."
