About This Item

Breslau: ben Wilhelm Gottlieb Koru, 1798. Half-Leather. Good/No Jacket. Boards rubbed with a few spots, front and rear endpapers lightly foxed. 1798 Half-Leather. [xii], 394 pp. Leather spine and corners, gilt titles, paper over boards. German text. Garve translated Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations and Cicero's De Officiis, Edmund Burke, etc. His criticism of Immanuel Kant directly led to Kant writing his Groundwork for the Metaphysic of Morals (it was expanded from an anti-Garve piece directly responding to Garve's characterization of his thought in several academic journals). Garve died of cancer the year this work was published, and the dedication of it reads 'An Herrn Immanuel Kant' ('To Mr. Immanuel Kant'), so despite their differences there was still a mutual respect. This work is related to ethics and moral doctrine throughout history, from the time of Aristotle up until its publication. The full title translates as 'Survey of the Most Distinguished Principles of Moral Doctrine, from the Age of Aristotle to Our Times.
