First illustrated edition by Billings, both volumes bound into one. Brown cloth over boards with gilt lettering and design on the spine. Gilt all page edges. Rebound edition. Some leaves somewhat brownspotted, and many plates evenly browned as usual. Some heavier staining to about 10 leaves and three plates. W. all 48 full-page wood-engraved. plates, including the frontispiece. Printed the year after the first edition. No Dust Jacket. Text and illustrations remain bright and clean, binding a secure, a scarce rare and collectible book.

First edition, octavo; xvi,232pp, with full complement of 34 engravings, 33 of which are folding. In contemporary unlettered full calf (a little worn with minor loss to board corners, sometime skilfully rebacked in matching leather), five raised spine bands, internally clean with only the lightest of occasional dust staining. Muller was deputy head of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, where he was instrumental to its transformation into a disciplined cadet academy. An attractive first edition example of his first work. Laurence Sterne possessed the text in second edition, with possible influence on Uncle Toby and Corporal Trim's obsessions with fortification in The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy. An excellent copy of M.R. James first collection of ghost stories in the publisher's original beige cloth binding. The third impression of the 1904 first edition with four illustrations, including frontispiece, by James McBryde who died leaving illustrations for the book unfinished.
The stories are: Canon Alberic's Scrapbook, Lost Hearts, The Mezzotint, The Ash-Tree, Number 13, Count Magnus, Oh, Whistle And I'll Come To You, My Lad and The Treasure Of Abbot Thomas.
Book is very good plus.
Boards are sturdy and are stamped in red and black. There are 2 red smudges on front board and a tiny tear to cloth at bottom corner of front board (barely perceptible when book is closed). Otherwise boards are Fine. Binding is sound.
Fore and bottom edges are untrimmed. Leaves are lightly age toned. Light age related brown spots to very early leaves and end papers. Otherwise, the leaves are remarkably clean.

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
