About This Item

London, England: Clarke, Beeton, and Co. Foreign Booksellers, 1853. Rebound in Half-Leather, marbled boards & endpapers, vi, 329pp., frontispiece and title page illustration, the two hundred and twenty-fifth thousand, printed by Salisbury & Co. The preface contains a publishers statement that notes payment of $2500 dollars to the authoress and that she has "interest in the sale of every volume of their editions". It is also noted that a "Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin" is in the press and will shortly appear. The first UK edition of "Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin" appeared in early 1853. By the end of 1852, numerous editions of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by various publishing houses were published to meet the demand. This edition is likely to be a late 1852 or early 1853 publication. Foxing and spotting throughout text, staining to the frontispiece (by Julian Portch), light corner creasing and light soiling. Leather and boards have edge/rub wear, chipping to the boards, small white paint speck marks, bubbling to the marbled paper, corner bumping and scarring to the leather. There are two page ones bound into the text, each textually the same but the margins are altered, the line break between the title and the opening paragraph slightly different and a printers "B" at the lower right absent from the first one (see picture). Actual book for sale pictured. 10.5 x 16.4 x 2.2 cm, wt499g. Reprint. Hard Cover. G. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.

Synopsis

In Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriett Beecher Stowe, the title character Uncle Tom is a long-suffering slave, loyal to both his faith and his master. Presented with an opportunity to escape, he instead chooses to remain in slavery to avoid embarrassing his master. After being sold to a slave trader, Tom suffers brutal treatment and is eventually beaten to death for his refusal to betray his friends — made to represent an ideal of true Christianity. Enormously popular (it was the best-selling novel of the 19th century) and influential, it’s publication in 1852 was instrumental in bringing visibility to the cruel reality of slavery. In more recent years, it has come under considerable criticism for its portrayal of meekness and subservience and the phrase “Uncle Tom” is sometimes used as an epithet for someone seen as overly subservient.

Excellent book to gain empathy and insight into the enslaved pathos, struggle and plight! This book presents well designed ideas to ennoble and elivate the human race as brothers, and sisters of a common God, and Father of us all.
