Venezia (Venice): Carlo Pecora, 1744. Two volumes (3 & 4 of 6) bound as one. Large 4to. Early full vellum binding with a brown leather title patch; all edges gilt; marbled pastedown endpapers. Parallel texts in Italian and French for seventy-two fables, each illustrated with a beautiful full-page color etching by Fossati. Each etching is printed in one of various shades of red, orange, brown, green, blue and black. In addition to the 72 plates, there are engraved vignettes on the 4 title pages, a red engraved headpiece for volume 3, and an engraved tailpiece following the text for each of the fables. Fossati (1706-1778) was an Italian architect who also was a very good printmaker and book illustrator. For the fables he portrayed animals realistically and used his architectural training for accurate renderings of baroque buildings. Gilt a little dulled on spine, some very slight rubbing to boards, black ink mark to bottom edge of text block, an excellent copy with the jacket, bright and only a little rubbed at ends and corners. This truly is a beautiful bookset! Full brown leather, fine binding with 5 raised bands on the spine. Gilt tooling and finish on the front and rear covers, the spine, edges, textblock, and inner pastedown edges. Red satin endpapers have small wrinkles or waves. In addition to the red satin pastedowns and endpapers, each volume comes with a red ribbon marker and a few of them are frayed at the ends. There are some scratches and small dark marks on the covers as well as the first few and last pages. There is some scuffing on the corner edges and spine head and tails. Adapted by Heyward with wife Dorothy, a playwright, in 1927 for the play of the same name. They later worked with composer George Gershwin on the 1935 light opera, "Porgy and Bess." Basis also for the 1959 Otto Preminger film starring Sidney Poitier, Dorothy Dandridge, and Sammy Davis Jr. 8vo gilt-stamped black cloth; top edge trimmed, rest untrimmed. Ownership signature on front endpaper of Mary Saunders Virginia White "Virginia S. White/ The Borough House/ Stateburgh [sic]" who at the time of publication was owner of the historic South Carolina Borough House Plantation. Endpapers darkened due to binding offset, boards a bit shelfworn on edges, corners lightly bumped; still very good in good, generally complete but age-worn dust jacket with old internal and external tape repair. Scarce in any jacket.
