About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers , 1854. 8vo, original cloth, gilt vignette on front cover, spine lettered in gilt, illustrated with 8 lithographed plates and 5 mezzotint plates, wood engravings in text, three charts (one of them folding), 552 pp. Spine faded, covers with marginal sunning, some wear at ends and corners, folding chart with some folds and tears in the margin; light foxing to some plates; otherwise very good. A nice copy.. This work takes reviews the first Grinnell Expedition to find out what happened to Sir John Franklin who set out on his own Polar expedition in 1847. This American expedition was headed by Lt. Edwin DeHaven, and Dr. Elisha Hunt Kane (1820-1857) would serve as cheif medical officer. Kane would actually lead the second Grinnell Expedition, and authored the present work . Unfortunately, Franklin was already dead by the time these expeditions went looking for him, but in both cases these expeditions faced many signficant challenges of their own.
