Washington: W.F. Roberts. The Perfect Press, n.d. [1898] 4 leaves printed one-side only, title-page printed in red and black, and with black & white header ornamentation, tissue-guarded frontispiece in black & white reproducting the painting, The Vampire, by Kipling's cousin Philip Burne-Jones (1861-1926). On title-page: "Written for a picture by Philip Burne-Jones exhibited at the New Gallery in London, 1897." Wheat-coloured wrappers with cover duplicating title-page but without the descriptive blurb, pamphlet-stitch binding. Covers lightly soiled and chipped. The poem was originally intended as a modest publicity piece to support his cousin's exhibit. Neither of the cousins could have predicted the impact of their joint venture upon the public, which spurred a flurry of unauthorized reproductions both in England and the US. This appears to be an unauthorized, early edition. (Richards E1-25). In 1915 it was adapted as "the silent film "A Fool There Was," introducing the "It Girl" Theda Bara, the word "vamp" became a permanent part of American slang." - (Rudyard Kipling: The Books I Leave Behind, p. 59). There is no publisher listed, but with its 1898 publication date, this pre-dates the editions by Buckles, Barse & Hopkins, and others. Illustrated with a rather suggestive frontis in black and white and a graveyard scene that serves as backgrounf to the text on each page. Very Good (Plus) condition: just a bit of creasing along the fore-edge. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. First Edition.. Soft Cover. Very Good Plus/No Jacket.
