About This Item

Temple Smith, London - first edition 1974 Hardcover, 5¾" x 8¾", with just jacket Ours is an ex-library copy in transparent protective covering, with usual stamps, and stickers. VERY GOOD book in VERY GOOD price-clipped dust jacket. The great trading cities of Venice and Amsterdam, at the height of their power, are studied here in terms of family structure, political functions, style of life, and personal attitudes and values. The author discusses patronage of the arts in the two cities and the ways in which children were trained for their careers in a ruling elite. He looks, too, at the gradual change that took place in both ruling classes from entrepreneurs to rentiers dependent on inherited wealth. With 8 illustrations.
