Thick 8vo, recent tan calf spine and corners, old marbled boards, engraved portrait frontispiece, , morocco lettering piece on spine, half title, large folding map, viii, cxxvi, 392 pp. Ex-library copy, rubber stamp on a few pages of the New Jersey Historical Society, marbled boards a bit rubbed, some foxing to endpapers and frontispiece, ink additions to Chippewa language word list, folding map with one repair to fold, and some minor chips and folds in one margin, still map is in very nice condition; overall very good. Sir Alexander MacKenzie (1763/4-1820) was born in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis and was an important explorer of the American continent. Around 1779 he joined the firm of Finlay and Gregory as a fur trader, and eventually he would take a post in the west, which set the stage for his exploratory efforts. MacKenzie is best known for his overland exploration of Canada, and reaching the Pacific Ocean in 1793. In addition to adding to a geographical understanding of the area he explored, he also added considerable knowledge of Native Americans in that region. This work includes a translation of some words from the Chipewyan language. This edition is preceded by the original London edition in 1801, and a Paris and New York editions earlier in 1802. While there is some confusion on the pagination of this edition, this copy appears complete, including the very attractive map of America, which is often missing. Wagner-Camp suggests that the Philadelphia edition was often published in two volumes and with three maps. The OCLC and Field list only one map. Howes M133. Wagner-Camp 1:5. Field 968. OCLC. ODNB.
