Boston: W. A. Wilde, 1944. Hardcover. Very Good Plus/Poor. Stevens, Beatrice. FIRST EDITION. AUTHOR'S INSCRIPTION AND SIGNATURE TO HALF-TITLE PAGE. Mildly cocked. Front bottom corner, nudged. Spinecaps folded under. Light stain runs length of spine and across 3.5" of bottom edge. Does not affect endpapers. Boards lightly scuffed. Pages age-tanned. Acid transfer from laid-in article to pp 316 / 317. Dustjacket poor. Many tears, creases, and various size chips. Moderately scuffed covers. Gilt lettering debossed to spine of black, cloth-covered boards. Illustrated endpapers. 366 pp. The story is based on the real life facts of renowned surgeon, Sir William James Wanless. At age 24 he went to India as a medical missionary. In the forty years there, he cared for lepers, trained Christian leaders, and performed thousands of operations. Although Sir William, his family and the Maharajah of Kolhapur are real, many other characters are fictitious providing imaginary conversations to fill in the true events.
