Commentary by Havelock Ellis. One of the very first novels dealing with lesbianism. This is the first edition after the printing of 1927 which was according to the inside flap of the dust wrapper - "...printed from the plates of the original edition." A very good copy with a very small chip to upper spine, otherwise a tight and very clean book. Small, unobtrusive remnants of former bookplate at the very top of the front pastedown. The original dustwrapper has a chip missing from the upper spine and shows moderate wear and soiling. A good + copy in the original jacket of Radclyffe's intimate and poignant novel.. Frist American Trade Edition. Very Good/Good. 8vo..

Synopsis

The Well of Loneliness is a 1928 lesbian novel by the English author Radclyffe Hall. It follows the life of Stephen Gordon, an Englishwoman from an upper-class family whose "sexual inversion" (that is, homosexuality) is apparent from an early age. She finds love with Mary Llewellyn, whom she meets while serving as an ambulance driver in World War I, but their happiness together is marred by social isolation and rejection, which Hall depicts as having a debilitating effect on inverts.
