Published by William Blackwood & Sons, London; 1905. First Edition. 8vo. Condition: Good+. no dj.
This first edition of Forster's first novel is a true rarity. Bound in original blue cloth with black title to front and gilt to spine, there is some general wear to the binding and fading to the spine, partly erasing the E of the author's name and publishing details at base. Inspite of this, the book remains in smart condition.
Inside, the pages are clean and bright with just some light toning and age spotting. There is a neat ownership inscription to half title. The hinges are weakening and open at title page and rear board, otherwise the stitching is tight and pages are clean and smart.
The book is housed in a specially made clam shell case, which is in excellent condition and very smart indeed.
In all, this is a handsome example of this very rare first novel of E. M. Forster, a true collector's item and it would sit well on any shelf.

Description:
12 mo. (7 x 4 1/2 inches) Glasgow, 1700. First Edition. (viii) 112 pages. Good condition: early nineteenth century half calf, marbled boards, considerable wear to hinges (front hinge split, but holding), title in gilt on spine.Walter Herries (or Harris) was a pamphleteer who participated in the first Darien "adventure." Upon his return to England, he was offered inducements by English politicians to write a book that would ruin the reputation of the members of the Darien Company. His book was "Declared by a royal proclamation to be a 'false, scandalous, and traitorous libel'."
This book, attributed to Ridpath, is an answer to Herries's book, and an attack on English politicians. Ridpath was a Scottish journalist who wrote and supported Whig interests against the Tories.

Description:
1549 GREEK Herodian Roman Histories Commodus Marcus Aurelias Poliziano RAREHerodian's 'History of Rome' is a collection of eight books covering the period of the death of Marcus Aurelius to the beginning of Gordian III's reign. Herodian's account is first-person narrative of one of the most politically unsettled times of the Roman Empire. Important names covered in Herodian's 'History' include Commodus, Julianus, Severus, and Pertinax, as well as the history of Zosimus.
This 1549 Greek is incredibly rare and desirable. It features both the Latin and Greek translations by Poliziano. According to the USTC, there are only three examples in any institutional holding in American institutions! Very rare!

Description:
Jacobi Gronovil, 1721. Hardcover. Fair. Bound in calf-skin vellum-- spine has 6 ridges with the words TACITUS Curante GRONOVIO (clearly done with quill and ink). It appears some text has worn away below this. The leather binding is an ivory color, more discolored along the spine, where it has begun to wear away at 2 of the ridges. Front and back are embossed with floral diamond design-- shows signs of shelfwear but nothing the sturdy vellum wouldn't handle. The binding is tight. Outer edges of pages very brown with age, dust and sun. Based on other book descriptions, I believe this is volume one of a two volume set. There's some foxing throughout the book, and yellowing around the edges of pages, as would be expected of a book this age. Paper is thicker than paper of later books, and you can see that each letter in the text was arranged by a typesetter. First pages (the introduction) begin with larger font that gradually reduces in size. 756 pages in all. The title page reads as follows: C. Cornelii…

St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
