First edition. *With a pencilled note on the title page: 'A hoax by Hesketh Pearson'. In the Preface, the anonymous author claims that 'Among the diplomats of Europe my name is a household word'. In fact, the author was Pearson, who in November 1926 was taken to court by the publishers, on a charge of obtaining payment for the book by false pretences. The trial was brief: Pearson's defence was that the book was an obvious hoax, and he was acquitted.
