White Shield was a mixed-blood member of the medicine fraternity. Chief of the Arikara and a scout for General George Armstrong Custer. The Arikara are an offshoot of the Pawnee, and more directly of the Skidi band of that tribe. Archivally framed, The frame is made from real tobacco leaves.

In the "Men of Texas", p. 1164, Texas State Archives it noted he had been active in the livestock business in West Texas for more than forty years. His ranch properties began in Sutton and stretched to McCulloch County. He was also a director of the First National Bank of Sonora and his ranch home was on the old Junction Highway. He wanted to build a fence along the Rio Grande to prevent the importation of cattle infested with ticks which were common in Mexico.
