[Np: The Photographer, ca. 1963].. Original glossy double-weight gelatin silver print from negative, 11 X 14" (inclusive of margins, image size 10.75 x 12.5"). Captioned in pencil on verso. About fine. An original print of one of the sequence of superb photographs taken by Yousuf Karsh on location in South Africa during the filming of the 1964 Diamond Films production, ZULU, directed by Cy Endfield. Karsh's invitation to join the production and photograph the cast and locale resulted in a sequence of photographs of a very high order. The present image, half-length formal portrait of future political leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi in character as Zulu King Cetshwayo kaMpande, shows the subject from waist up, dressed in animal skins, with an enormous elephant tusk arching in the background. The image is identified as "No. 5-17" in the series and captioned "Chief Butalezi [sic] in his ancestral robes." Chicago, IL: Max Rigo, 1911. Folding panoramic postcard (290 x 195 mm). Professionally mounted, gazed, and framed using archival materials. Composite photographic image depicting the Chicago lakefront and early planes. The sender's and receiver's details filled out in black ink, and four landmarks noted on the image in the same hand. Marks from stamp, some toning and spotting of the verso, creasing and wear, particularly near the original folds (which are fragile) and at the corners and slightly affecting the image, small tape repair to one corner on the verso. Very good condition. A striking, oversized panoramic postcard photomontage depicting one of the most important aviation events prior to the First World War, the August 1911 International Aviation Meet at Grant Park in Chicago. The Chicago meet was the largest airshow held up to that time, only eight years after the first powered flight by the Wright Brothers. With 126 silver gelatin photographs all mounted w/ black corners, sized from 2.5 x 3.5 in. up to 5 x 7 in., and nearly all w/ manuscript annotations in white ink below in the margins. Contemporary faux alligator skin post-binder, punch-sewn at gutter margin w/ black braid (minor edgewear, rubbing, minor bumping to corners), still NF album; 2nd -- [4 leaves (unnumbered).], pencil manuscript, written in clear cursive using R.B. [10 leaves (unnumbered).], w/ each separately featuring 5 linen-backed silver gelatin mounted photographs (50 in total), sized 3.5 x 5.5 in., rounded corners, many w/ negative no. in lower fore-edge w/in the negative, leporello accordion style black linen hinges for each leaf, mounted w/ linen hinges at gutter margin. Original stamped folding post-binder salesman case, w/ foldover flap, snapped clasp, w/ gilt lettering stamped on front (minor rubbing, shelfwear), still a VG bright copy. First edition, thus, of this exceedingly scarce original salesman sample photo catalogue for the short-lived truck manufacturer. Founded originally in 1862 by Stewart Sr., who opened the business originally in Covington, KY, the company quickly grew, and eventually divided into three separate corporations by 1902.
