Octavo (6" x 9.25"), brown and tan boards in pictorial jacket. 239pp. with notes, bibliography and index. Illustrated in black and white with maps and photographs. Very good or better. Just a little smudge on the fore-edge. Light wear to the jacket, primarily faint scuffs and scratches. "Lee, a diehard Southerner, and Chase, a firm supporter of the Union, are profiled by their own words, their diaries written at a time when the uncertainties of the violent conflict weighed heavily on the minds of the nation."
