Suffolk Mills Group, Ipswich, Suffolk, 1978. First Edition. Softcover (Saddle-stapled). Very Good Condition. The windmill has been a part of the Suffolk scene for almost 800 years and some of the earliest known English windmills were in Suffolk. The most famous example is 'Dean Herbert's Mill' at Haberdon, Bury St. Edmunds; Bennett and Elton, and other writers since, give an account of this episode, which took place in 1191. Briefly, Dean Herbert built a windmill for his own use: this caused Abbot Samson to order its demolition as he alone had the right to build mills. This was one of the shortest lived windmills ever! Another early reference, though not so reliable, is to a windmill standing at the time when Orford Castle was built in 1165. Many windmills were built during the middle ages and their descendants still stand at some sites. Other old sites have left an artificial or natural 'Mill Hill'. Several can be found in Suffolk, for example at Barnham, Metfield, Bacton and Helmingham. Some surviving mills stand on mounds as at Lavenham, these mounds being used to give height to a small post mill (for this was the earliest type of windmill in this country) and also to keep people and animals from wandering into the path of the sails. By the 17th century several hundred windmills were standing in the county and a few of them survived into the present century, one being at Drinkstone, dated 1689. However, the 18th and early 19th centuries saw a boom in windmilling during which many mills were rebuilt and new sites were established. Most mill remains date from this period, which also saw increasing numbers of tower and smock mills being built. The post mill remained the most common type, unlike such counties as Norfolk and Lincolnshire which widely adopted the tower mill.
