The text is illustrated with 103 coloured plates, six figures and two maps. Dark brown coloured boards with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Illustrated dustwrapper with black and dark purple coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. In this book a number of leading aboriginal painters, all represented in the collection of the Australian National Gallery,are examined. The different painting styles and use of colour reflect regional variations in Aboriginal Art: – "... the powerful and animated natural figurative forms evident in West Arnhem Land art; the formal compositions and stylised figures from Central Arnhem Land; the intricate patterns of cross-hatched lines in the paintings of North East Arnhem Land; the huge dotted canvases reverberating with colour and movement from the desert region; and the solid earth the quality of the art of Western Australia." – from front fold over panel blurb.
